Helping the disabled and elderly is a labour of love for Burdekin’s Lynette Norris who has won Queensland’s Driver of the Year Award for wheelchair accessible taxis.
A taxi driver in the Burdekin region for more than ten years, Lynnette is providing an essential service for the disabled, frail and elderly who rely on her for their weekly shopping and pharmaceuticals.
Based in Ayr, Lynette says she has made lifelong friendships with her customers who she treats like her family including former MP Rosemary Menkens who would not let anyone else drive her except Lynette.
“I really enjoy being part of the community and it’s such a close knit one in Burdekin, we all do what we can to help out each other.”
“I have seen and heard all the hard work the elderly have done to make this community what it is and that is why I feel the need to help them now as they become less mobile,” said Lynette.
Nominated twice in the wheelchair accessible award category, Lynette beat out Ian Colquhoun from Townsville Taxis and also Kanwalpreet Singh from Brisbane Black & White Cabs.
