Requirements for Driver Authorisation
Driver Authorisation(DA) is a qualification that a driver of a motor vehicle providing a public passenger service must attain and maintain to operate the vehicle. Any person who drives a taxi for hire or reward is required to hold driver authorisation for taxi services.

 Age

 

Applicants for taxi DA must be at least 20 years of before their application can be accepted.

 Entitlement to work in  Australia

 

Applicants for DA or renewal of driver authorisation must provide documentary proof of their entitlement to work in Australia.

 Driver Licence

 

Applicants for taxi DA must hold a current Australian open driver licence or a restricted driver (work) licence of the appropriate class.

Also, applicants must have held an open or provisional driver licence (Australian or overseas) continuously for at least three years for a car, truck or bus.


 

 Training

 

Applicants for taxi DA who will be driving in major contract areas (where the fleet size is 35 or more) are required to successfully complete 7 national taxi drivers competency units   that must be provided by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

 English Proficiency

 

Applicants for taxi DA are required to undertake an English assessment in accordance with the National Minimum English Standard (NMES), delivered by Central Queensland Institute of TAFE.

 Medical Assessment

 

Applicants must obtain a medical certificate for a commercial vehicle driver.

 Criminal history check

 

Applicants must not have a criminal history that includes any offences that disqualify them from driving a taxi. The criminal history check is performed by Queensland Police Service and it includes all of checks and protections associated with Blue Cards (working with children and vulnerable people).

 Driving history

 

Applicants must have a driving history that the chief executive, Department of Transport and Main Roads, considers is suitable to hold DA.
